E-LIS was formed in 2003 for the deposit of documents in the Library and Information Science (LIS) and Communication domains. It is the first international e-server in this subject area and resulted from the RCLIS (Research in Computing, Library and Information Science) and the DoIS (Documents in Information Science) projects, promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. Formerly E-LIS was hosted by the Italian Consorzio Interuniversitario Lombardo per Elaborazione Automatica (CILEA); in 2013 E-LIS moved to the University of London Computer Centre (ULCC); and in 2017 moved again to its present host: Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II. E-LIS relies on the voluntary work of individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and is non-commercial. There is neither funding nor interest in profiting from the initiative.
